RDAMNC is now using REMPLAN
RDA Mid North Coast is pleased to announce we are now using REMPLAN software to assist in research and benchmarking the region.
RDAMNC has agreed to a two Year License agreement contract with Compelling Economics a commercialised offshoot of Latrobe University and providers of REMPLAN, for use of this economic modelling software package. This software will provide detailed analysis on the nature of the economy for each of our six council areas, our combined Mid North Coast region and comparisons with the State.
The REMPLAN model is built on region-specific input-output economic models. Information gained from the model includes estimates of regional output, regional exports, regional imports and wages for each of the sectors. Further, it is possible to examine the types of inputs used by each sector and determine the source of supply of these inputs. The input-output model can provide a picture of the interdependent nature of the regional economy.
Data in the REMPLAN model are updated via online cloud technology when it becomes available and the data sources include the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and National Chart of Accounts.
This version of REMPLAN provides data for the 111 industry sector level (though this may condensed to 19) and includes additional modules for:
- Tourism analysis. Data from the ABS National Accounts Tourism Satellite Account and Tourism Research Australia Tourism Profiles are used to estimate the total value of tourism for each council region and the mid north coast. The tourism module also includes an event impact tool to determine the local/regional benefits of events.
- Workforce analysis. Detailed workforce reports for each council area and the mid north coast region at each industry level are available. The reports for each industry include age, education, hours worked, income, language spoken at home, occupations, method of travel to work and place of usual residence. Local and regional workforce profiles can be compared with State and National profiles.
- GAP analysis. Provides insights into the potential import replacement and value-adding opportunities for our economy.
RDA MNC State of the Region Report
The RDA MNC with REMPLAN now has the capacity to prepare a “State of the Region Report” as a regular biannual publication. The first is intended for the end of March 2012 and a further in Sept/Oct once the 2011 Census data becomes available.
The REMPLAN calculates Gross Regional Product to measure the position of the regional economy, set benchmarks and measure this on a per capita basis. Benchmarking exercises will enable a greater understanding of the gaps in performance and strengths of our regional economy.
Community Access to data
The developers of REMPLAN are currently in the process of producing economic profiles which will be posted online and available to the public – the profile for our region is expected to be available in March 2012 and coincide with our State of the Region Report. RDAMNC will also communicate reports and results out of REMPLAN on our website.
REMPLAN also has the ability to model the effects of change by assessing the economic impact of real or proposed changes in the region, for example an increase/decrease in jobs or investment in a particular industry. This facility will also allow us to provide additional information to funding applications regarding the economic impact to the local and regional economy of projects.
RDAMNC is currently in the process of developing guidelines for Data Requests including provision for fee for service and in-kind support and looks forward to working with Compelling Economics and the region in utilising REMPLAN to enhance information available on our region. MNC Regional Research Network
RDAMNC are planning to establish a Regional Research Network during 2012. The concept is to work closely with people responsible for data collection across the region (including Councils, industry and community sector) to support collaboration on research of regional significance and cost-effectiveness in data collection. This network will predominantly operate in the online space – perhaps coming together face to face for an annual regional seminar/workshop.
To express an interest in being part of the Regional Research Network, please email Todd Green: toddg@rdamidnorthcoast.org.au
